Marmots~Nature Notes~060811
When traveling through the Sierra, we often see marmots, but when we stopped at Tioga Lake, these two were playing on one of the turnouts when we pulled in. They totally ignored us and continued their play, and I was able to take these photos of the two of them. They were quite playful and they entertained us with their antics. Yes, the lake was still partially frozen on July 1!!! When we stopped to take photos of a waterfall, there was a family of marmots playing in the rocks below the waterfall, but they all scampered away when we stopped. Marmots like to live in rock piles and there are both plenty of rock piles AND marmots in Yosemite! They are like large squirrels and eat grasses and other vegetation. They live in family groups and can be quite vocal! Nature Notes for July 8, 2011. To view other participants, please visit: http://ramblingwoods.com/

I've never seen a marmot. Wonderful shots of them playing and such a beautiful place.
Aren't they just too beautiful? That must be pretty high up to still be melting. Absolutely beautiful shots!
Wonderful shots, I blew them up and they appear to be whispering sweet nothings into each other's ears. Must be mating season, they look to be of different sexes.
These are really beautiful pics of the little guys.
Having fun in the sun.
What cute little guys; when we were at Mt. Rainer, we saw a lot of marmots!
I didn't know what one looked like either and they play..how sweet is that....
Delightful creatures! I've never seen a marmot. Thanks for sharing your pics.
