Agave blossoms~Fabulous Friday~051311

Agaves are beginning to bloom all over the desert and up in our local mountains. They are so beautiful! I really enjoy getting close to them! Fabulous Friday for May 13, 2011. To see other participants, please go to: http://mcdougallphotography.blogspot.com/

Do they have a scent? I always think that nothing grows in the desert, but the idea of seeing a field of these flowers is appealing.

Oh, no! The desert has a lot of plants! Palo verdes, desert willows, smoketrees, acacias, all kinds of cacti...You know, I didn't smell these! I'll have to do that!

Desert plants have adapted to living in the desert. The smoke tree sends its roots straight down to get water. For every inch above ground, their roots go a FOOT underground! My dad spent YEARS trying to transplant one for my godmother...he finally figured out the calculus and she had a beautiful one in her yard (finally!)...others have roots close to the surface to collect ground water. The desert is amazing!
