Back from vacation!!!! Outdoor Wednesday 070511

We're BACK from vacation and back into the heat and humidity of the desert. We spent 6 days up at the Mammoth Lakes and rented a studio cabin there. There was still snow on the higher elevations, including Yosemite National Park. The camp grounds at Twin Lakes just opened for business, as did the little general store, which 10 days ago, was still snowed in! The pack horses were just brought into the Mammoth Lakes Pack Outfit. It was a busy weekend and ALL the campgrounds and hotels were FULL!!! We were lucky to get our cabin. Many people drove to the Twin Lakes and either fished or kayaked or just spent the afternoon among the trees. We took the bus shuttle down to Devil's Postpile and hiked out to take photos of it late one afternoon. We were entertained by the antics of young gray squirrels, chipmunks, and blue jays. Yesterday, as we drove home, thunderheads were developing over the lower Sierra and Mt. Whitney and it was pouring over above Joshua Tree National Park. Ahhh....the desert in summer! It made me think it was cooler here just reading about your trip. Texas is under the worst drought ever.

Summer seems a little late in some places.
