Deserts and Beyond
Deserts and beyond...places in and around the southern California deserts and beyond. Photo taken at Canyon Lake, in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona, December 2011. A few minutes later, after the sun disappeared, these cliffs were their normal color. They were only golden for a short time and I'm glad we were able to view them in their glory.

Up the mountain
It was such a crisp and clear autumn morning Sunday that I couldn't WAIT to get out and drive up Highway 74, up into our local mountains. It's only a 12 minute drive from my front door to the pinyon forests of the San Jacinto mountain wilderness. And, along the way, I've got some terrific views! The first one is looking down at Palm Desert. Joshua Tree National Park is up in the mountains all the way across the velley. The second photo shows some of the ocotillos which grow along the highway and the last one is looking up the road to the mountains. There is only one road from Palm Desert up to Idyllwild, at over 5,000 feet, and that is Highway 74. It also goes down the other side of the mountains to Hemet, CA, but I don't go down there...too much traffic!
