Out front I have hollyhocks, sunflowers, zinnias (from last summer) and cosmos coming up from last season's plants. I have various shrubs, too, for the hummingbirds. We have a bird bath in the front yard and one in the back, next to the hollyhocks. I have sunflowers, hollyhocks, and sweet peas in the back and bird feeders too. My gardens keep me sane, in these uncertain times. I go out in the front and back every morning and water. I have spots of bush beans and squash, too.

Here are just some random photos I've been taking:
Yup. Hubby and I already have the flu and we've now been coughing at each other for 10 days. It will eventually go away, but until then, we are tired and worn out. Before we both got sick, I did manage a trip over the mountain to see our son and his family. This was the day after a big snow dump in our local mountains...
Our days are in the 80's or low 90's (no air conditioning turned on, thank goodness). we've had Santa Ana winds and this coming week we will have two days in the high 90's (air conditioning ON...)

Bodie has become a long-legged beauty. He loves to "help" me feed the birds in the back yard every morning. He doesn't really help. He just runs all around the yard and almost knocks me over! But, that is his idea of helping!

I have planted some hollyhock and sunflower seeds in various isolated spots in the back yard. He IS leaving them alone. As soon as we get past this last hot burst, I'll plant my sweet peas along the chain link fence. I don't want to do it when temps will be that hot.

Not much is going on here. He and Abby, our indoor cat, have reached a semi-truce, but she does outsmart him EVERY TIME! If she's on my lap, he gets jealous and tries to knock her off. If he is on my lap, she jumps up on me anyway. He is slowly making friends with our 2 outdoor male cats. The older one just completely ignores him and his shenanigans, but the younger one still doesn't completely trust Bodie (with good reason)...

I'm still working on my hand made journals. You can find them here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/DesertsandBeyond?ref=pr_shop_more
I've got quite a few new ones as well as other items now in my shop.

I had lunch with 3 other teachers who retired from my school either the year I did or the year after and we are going to meet again in December after one of them travels through the Middle East and Europe. We are ALL GLAD we retired!

Until next time...
Bailey LOVES Bodie!!!

We adopted a 6 month old lab mix from the Inyo County shelter in June. They had just picked him up the previous day. I walked right past him and couldn't even look at him...he looked too much like our previous dog, my black lab, Ripley. However, HE was the one hubby picked out. (OF COURSE!)

We were heading up to a cabin that didn't allow pets AT ALL, so we arranged to pay his fees, have him neutered, had him get a rabies shot, a tick bath (he was COVERED with them) and a deworming. We picked him up on the way home and he rode home for 5 hours on hubby's lap. I only made one stop in Adelanto to use the restroom. I took him out on a leash (they even gave us a harness for him), but he didn't do anything.

He has now met all 5 grandkids and loves them! His mix apparently is Weimeraner. He "points" and howls at fire trucks, just like our son's Weimeraner, who we had for the 3 years that he was living in an apartment. He also has the body and long legs of a Weimeraner and he constantly has to be touching us! In fact, he sleeps between us at night. He has absolutely NO food aggression, but he is a good watchdog! In fact, when our son met him, he wanted to take him home...!!! NO WAY~ He is an excellent rider in the car now and hops right in, eager to go on new adventures!

HOWEVER, like both a lab and Weimeraner, he LOVES TO DIG! My hollyhocks that I planted from seed are mostly destroyed. I didn't even bother to plant sweet peas. FORGETABOUTIT. So, I've planted sunflowers and hollyhocks (harvested from last year's crop) out in the front yard. My sunflowers are already 4' tall and the hollyhocks are growing. I also have a few California poppies out front. I'm hoping for a really pretty front yard next spring!

Fall here in the desert and up in our local mountains is a quiet time. I drove up to visit my horses a couple of weekends ago and it was a dull and cloudy day. Hmmm.... or was it? There is a certain beauty in fall. Frankly, fall is my favorite season. It's quiet, unlike Spring, when life is bursting out of the trees and ground. Fall is, to me, when nature is getting ready to sleep. Here are some photos I took that day:

I have mature sunflowers which are dropping their pollen. My hollyhocks have tons of buds on them and they are opening up new ones. They are over 8' tall now. My sweet peas, however, are on their last legs. We've had too many days of near-triple digit temperatures and they simply cannot take that kind of heat. I did have a nice crop of them, however, this year. I could often just go out back and smell them from afar. I have enjoyed them this year.

I find it restful to just wander around out back. I listen to the birds. I watch the hummingbirds come and go. There is one female who seems to live year round in our yard and a couple of males. I have sparrows, finches, and verdin. The verdin seem to LOVE the pollen on the sunflowers and I catch them every afternoon poking around them. I am glad to provide both food and shelter for the birds.

But it is my hollyhocks that truly amaze me. I had a dismal crop of 3 of them last year. Those 3 survived our brutal summer and I planted more seeds last fall. Their cheerfulness, their gorgeous colors, and their tenacity delight me. I often just wander out back with my camera in hand and marvel at them.

Here's the link: https://ramblingwoods.com/desertsandbeyondhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11861734579985048446noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5454491381670675786.post-86540632518193685622018-04-23T08:46:00.004-07:002018-04-23T08:46:52.944-07:00Birds, birds, and more birds! Here in the desert we do have a lot of different birds. We don't have the same ones as cooler locations, but the desert DOES maintain a fairly diverse amount of birds.

We have hummingbirds, ravens, finches, sparrows, mockingbirds, and different kinds of doves. Those all seem to stay here year round. Ducks and geese fly down for the winter and can be seen in the parks and around golf course waterways. Our daughter even has a duck couple that come to her neighborhood every spring, which delights the two grandkids.

Here in my yard, because I do feed the birds, I seem to get more species. We've had about 7 grosbeaks for the last 10 days or so, although I do not see or hear them this morning. They stop by every year, about this time. I know this because I have documented their arrival on my blods and now I've done so in my personal journal too. Alas, this morning, I don't see or HEAR them at all...

We also have attracted a family of Cooper's hawks who prey upon the doves. Alas, I can often see them swoop through the yard. I have actually stopped and chatted with one of them several times.

We once had a hummingbird nest right outside my office window, but that was about 20 years ago and one of my collies ATE the nest! Ugh. Once in a while I do see a dove nest. They are very messy and not well organized. The verdin make their nests in the acacia trees and there was a nest out front, but during one of our horrible wind storms this spring, it fell apart and they haven't returned to it. The verdin do, however, enjoy the Niger thistle seed that I put out in a feeder and I now see them devouring the pollen from my sunflowers out back. I wish I could get a photo of them, but my windows are too dirty for a decent photo! Alas...

The birds will probably thin out this week when we have temps of 100 degrees for 5 days. I DID look out (looking for the grosbeaks this morning) and see a WOODPECKER with a beautiful red head on one of the orange, so I will continue to set them outside. He was enjoying it until I moved...
We can still leave our windows open and allow the fresh air inside. When it gets to the mid-90's, however, we close up the house and turn on the air conditioner (we set it to 79 degrees)...being in our mid-60's, both hubby and I feel and react to the higher temperatures much more than we used to...

But, for now, the weather is wonderful!

In fact, it was SO WONDERFUL that I went out this morning and cleaned off the boxes of books and STUFF that were sitting on the front porch! I even swept it (I did not use the hose due to water restrictions). And, the birds are all busy. We have been visited for a week now by 4 grosbeaks who like to appear every afternoon at the feeder right outside my office window.

And, yesterday hubby and I brought in my new chair, threw out the OLD, USED, dog-smelling COUCH, and another chair. They are awaiting pickup by the trash company today. So, now hubby and I each have a recliner/rocker in the living room. He has taken over his "MAN CORNER" and I'm next to the front door. I like it there. I can open that window and hear the birds.

I brought back some horse hair for the birds, but they haven't touched it yet. Hmmmm....I know the birds up at the ranch LOVE IT for their nesting material. I'll give it a few more days...

My hollyhocks are doing just fine. I think next fall I will plant them along with my sweet peas all along my chain link fence.

That's all for now.
~~Cheryl Ann~ Well, SOMETHING isn't working so I can't post photos! :-(desertsandbeyondhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11861734579985048446noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5454491381670675786.post-33609758694157568002018-04-14T05:19:00.002-07:002018-04-14T05:19:07.510-07:00A hollyhock and a busy bee...I was out photographing my hollyhocks a couple of mornings ago and I did notice a bee in one of them. And, it was a VERY BUSY BEE! It was COVERED with pollen...
Right now I have hollyhocks, sweet peas, lavender, and sunflowers. I have sunflowers blooming and some just sprouting, so I hope to have them all summer (as long as I remember to water them!) My three lavender plants all survived last summer's heat and it was DREADFUL here last summer...some days were 120 and 122 degrees! Ugh.

I am constantly amazed at the hollyhocks. I tried them last year and only got 3 plants. This year those 3 (which survived over the summer because I DID remember to water them every day!) are still with me and 4 more! I have white, light pink, dark pink, and 2 more that haven't opened up yet.

My sweet peas are AMAZING this year. Last year they got zapped EARLY with triple digit temps, but I just checked them and they all survived yesterday's heat.

The sunflowers just do their thing...grow and smile.

You know, it IS so relaxing just to go outside and marvel at this beauty. I have finches and sparrows and verdin who now come to visit the sunflowers. Bees come to the lavender and hollyhocks. I set up 2 chairs to just sit and watch the birds, bees, and hummingbirds. I seem to be down to just one male hummingbird right now. There were 3 that over-summered here and were here, but they seem to have moved on. This one is content to stay.

We have such a short spring here before the triple digit temperatures hit. I am really enjoying watching everything right now!
I'm not sure what this is...

Spring in the desert is a subtle thing. We certainly aren't having a super bloom this year! The lack of rain has been very noticeable. I hardly saw any lupines last Sunday when we drove from the desert to Temecula. It is a very dismal year for wildflowers.

However, I do have several things blooming in my yard right now. I see the light about 7 a.m. is the best, or about 4:30 in the afternoon, so I may try to go out this afternoon or tomorrow morning and take more photos!

Until then, please enjoy these!
Take care.

https://www.amazon.com/Meet-Frugalwoods-Achieving-Financial-Independence/dp/0062668137/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1522014532&sr=1-1&keywords=frugalwoods

and I must admit it has been one of the most influential books of my life! (at 66 years young, I might add)...

It's TIME to take CONTROL of our finances! Sheesh. We've both been retired now for nearly 2 years and I'm tired of having $35 left over at the end of the month. ENOUGH, ENOUGH, ENOUGH!

So, I'm instituting a "NO BUY" month next month (April). NO extra spending. NO fabric. NO Michaels. NO JoAnn's. NO Hobby Lobby. I'll be making journals with the supplies I have on hand. I need to complete 3 to replace the 3 I've sold this month already.

If you haven't read her book, the link is above. She also has a blog: http://www.frugalwoods.com/

I can't WAIT to make homemade bread, but we currently have some from a bakery up in Bishop that we need to finish off. I'm looking at applesauce bread recipes right now!

Until next time,
Our mountains were getting snow and the sand dunes were covered with ripples! I made 2 YouTube videos of that road and they are linked below:

snowy mountains: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xyb80iXni0

sand dunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUpTFGcgENs

And, if you are interested, I also did a video about my sunflowers in the back yard. ALL of these were from the bird seed that fell out of the feeders!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98mYJA7tqzo
Aren't they amazing? All different sizes and colors!

Take care. Enjoy your day!
I didn't realize how LONG it has been since I've been over here! TOO LONG!

I've been so busy with my craft projects that I honestly haven't taken many photos. We are heading to the Living Desert Reserve Saturday with our daughter and her 4 year old and 1 year old, so I'll take my camera with me.

Other than that, I went up to the horses Saturday and Gigondas, my big red thoroughbred mare, stepped on my right foot and wouldn't MOVE! I was screaming and waving my arms to get her off and she finally sighed and moved! And, yes, I had my steel toed boots on and it still HURT! OY! My foot is now completely black and blue!!!! NO BUENO!

We've had fairly nice temps here lately, in the low 90's, but last weekend we had triple digits and they are forecast AGAIN this coming weekend!

I pulled out my autumn decorations and I'm busy decorating the front porch. I LOVE autumn. I do believe it is my favorite time of the year.

Finally, I visited our local nursery (NOT a chain store) and bought 3 plants yesterday and 6 packets of seeds: sweet peas, hollyhocks, and nasturtiums. I need to go out back and weed along the fence. I won't plant them with this heat coming this weekend, but after that, I will! YAY!

Take care.
It's from several years ago. I was struck by the tenacity of this little grass in the middle of the sea of red sand.
Please come visit!I've been busy lately trying to get my ETSY shop going. It isn't easy going through thousands (Yes! literally THOUSANDS) of photos! Phew! I only have these up so far! Some are framed and some are just photos (5x7). It has taken me a FULL WEEK to just get this much done!

Between babysitting, running errands, getting stuff to Goodwill, babysitting, getting the car fixed, babysitting (do you notice a pattern here?)...I haven't had much time to just SIT DOWN and post more photos! I have some I want to post...maybe this weekend.

Anyway, here's the link to my shop:
It's hard keeping up with 3 blogs and Facebook!

However, yesterday I went to Sunnylands with two of my now-retired colleagues from my school. We try to get together a couple times each month, even if we just meet for coffee.

Sunnylands is the "playground of presidents" and is located in Rancho Mirage, CA. It is a 15 acre estate. I think every president since Eisenhower has stayed there at one point and played golf there.

So, off we went! We bypassed the $21 tour of the house (too sterile for us!) and instead we walked around the gardens (free!). It was a beautiful but cool day here in the desert, especially with views of the snow-covered San Jacinto mountains!

Here are some of the photos I took yesterday:

I'm finding that most of my "free" time is now devoted to taking care of hubby. He is on 3 different medications and frankly, I think they are making him loopy (loopier than usual!). He is forgetful. His short term memory is SHOT. He sleeps 8 hours, and then sleeps again another 4 hours during the daytime. He SITS in his chair ALL DAY!

Sometimes I just HAVE to get out of the house! I've visited with my friends (2 of whom retired the same time I did) and another colleague who has been out on disability. I FINALLY went up to visit the horses. They are all woolly and ready for winter. I TRY to get out every day, but some days I, too, just stay at home. I've got my autumn decorations up and the winter ones ready to get put outside.

I'm reading Stephen King novels and drinking brandy every night, trying to cope with the election results. Oh, and we DO NOT watch the news anymore...just too depressing!

I took a car load of school stuff over to Goodwill and I have another load of clothes and books ready to go. After working for 30 years, putting two kids through 5 years of college (each), frankly it is good just to be AT HOME! :-)

Have a Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy your loved ones.
There is an excellent view of the desert from there and I can smell all the desert plants. Doves, cottontails, hummingbirds, and lizards are frequently seen. If you take one of the trails, people do see bighorn sheep. It is just a great place to go, walk, and relax!
I went because Tuesday I was so dizzy I couldn't walk straight or even sit down without falling. Turns out, it was vertigo from all the stress!

Hubby is doing well on his new meds. Since all of his tests were negative, our doctor believes that since he didn't eat breakfast and only had a Jamba Juice smoothie (LOTS OF SUGAR), he passed out. He has now changed meds, too, since that was part of the problem. NOT EATING breakfast, skipping meals, eating a fatty diet...all contributed. He (and I, as well) are now on a low carb, less wheat diet with lots of lean protein and fruits and vegetables. We had salmon and a salad for dinner last night. He is also eating smaller meals several times a day (usually fruit)...instead of one GINORMOUS meal at dinner.

Lesson learned.

I am to take him OUT for exercise at least once a day, so yesterday we walked around our city park. He didn't want to go, but since I was driving, that's where the car ended up. I think he actually enjoyed it, although he complained the whole time. He just has to get used to his new lifestyle, which includes diet changes AND exercise!!!!

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers. He seems to be doing fine.
I put up these pretty fall leaves outside the front door...
His heart rate dropped to 30, causing him to lose consciousness. It turns out his medication was the culprit. He had fatigue, dizziness, a rash, and a couple other symptoms from it. However, none of us connected those to his medication (beta blocker).

PHEW!

That was too scary. He is at home now, resting, and reading the newest Michael Collins book.

Thank you for your well wishes. I appreciate it.
